Yesterday (18-10-2011) I attended a seminar “Datacentre Security Event | Protecting your Datacentre with Trend Micro”. The event is about protecting vmware environment with Trend. Session was informative and well organised. During the session I got information of two interesting topics related to virtualisation / cloud. One is imagine virtually anything, & second is vblock. Both of them talking about three company’s collaboration in virtual solutions. It’s really powerfull collaboration.

Imagine virtually anything

Imagine virtually anything is collaboration of Cisco, NetApp and VMware. They have teamed up to create an industry-leading alliance: Imagine Virtually Anything. How does that translate into solutions and technologies that can be designed, deployed and can make your data centre ready for tomorrow? Through joint product development, integration, validation and documentation, the data centre solutions and technologies are ready for you, today.

vblock

In vblock it’s a collaboration of VMware, Cisco, and EMC. Vblock converged infrastructure platforms from VCE virtually eliminate the complexity that is inherent in traditional data center setups. The elegant simplicity starts the first time end-users engage with VCE. Instead of a handful of competing vendors with a myriad of components, specing a Vblock system is as easy as determining capacity needs. And that’s just the first benefit of converged infrastructure companies enjoy.

Consolidation and virtualization help businesses deliver valuable services more efficiently, increase flexibility, and lower costs. The Riverbed® Services Platform (RSP) gives you the ability to run up to five additional services and applications virtually in a protected partition on the Steelhead® appliance from Riverbed. The Steelhead appliance is the only WAN optimization device to run industry-leading technology from VMware as the virtualization platform.

Using this revolutionary approach, you can deploy edge services virtually in all your branch offices without having to deploy and maintain full-blown servers to run the applications, thereby delivering a branch-office-in-a-box solution to organizations. This minimizes the hardware needed at the branch office, enabling you to consolidate IT operations even further.

Riverbed Services Platform (RSP)

With the RSP, you can reduce complexity, cut costs, and simplify management, while simultaneously delivering essential local services. The RSP runs on most Steelhead appliance models to protect your existing investment and deliver better ROI.

RSP Feature Summary

Citrix – Branch Repeater is a branch in a box solution. It accelerates, optimize, and consolidate. The beauty part for me is the consolidation, essential Windows services (file, print, DHCP, DNS, WINS, Domain Controller, Active Directory and DFS) on a single device with Citrix Branch Repeater with Windows Server. It’s servicing the branch network requirement, optimization, acceleration, VPN, virtual desktops, and server. Reduces the TCO, maintenance cost, and ensures high availability.

One of the latest trends in business desktops are virtual desktop. Citrix Xen desktop playing major role here. It delivers any desktop, any user and any location. In today’s business environment mobile employees are more. Where ever user moves he gets all the access. Managing or setting up small offices with physical desktops are highly expensive. This is one of the challenges addressed by virtual desktops. Power and cooling requirement. Earlier the delivery quality and speed of virtual desktops was bad. Now the access speeds increased, delivery quality matured. Antivirus, patch management, deployment of new applications, setting up of new work stations. These are the areas we have major savings. Once we deploy virtual desktops. Virtual desktops accessible from laptop, smart phones and other smart devises. This is one of the major IT cost saving technology.

I had a chance to attend the conference (09-03-2011). It was rich contented and lot of thought process in different angles. Its benefits, commercials, challenges, security, legal and future. One thing sure the drive is towards cloud, it’s private, public and hybrid. Cloud computing is there the time internet started or the mainframe started. Now the service delivery models changed. Tomorrow this service can call it as different name with some added value or modifications. Discussion of PaaS, IaaS, SaaS was fruitful and given thought of the service model. Cloud model has CAPX and OPX benefits. But it’s depends the maturity of the organization or how the approach is. Couple of challenges related to this region discussed about the connectivity, legal aspects and security. More and more players coming this market with different service design. The concept still to go for more maturity and definitions. Virtualisation, consolidation, thin clients are the couple of components making this journey. Anywhere any time access. Optimization and de-duplication also part in it.
